I've successfully installed XP SP3 on a DV5Z (custom build). Here is what I did, you will need to check that your DV5Z has the same components before using these drivers.
Step 1 Create an XP boot disc
Get the AMD motherboard/SATA drivers slipstreamed into an XP SP2 installation disk. I use NLite for this from http://www.nliteos.com

Other forum posts have more information on how to create the disc but I found NLite pretty easy to use. I suggest slipstreaming the SP2 patch into your installation disc.
Step 2 Install XP
Install XP from a Bootable disc you created using NLite. Get XP working and upgrade to SP2 if your installation disc wasn't already SP2.
You should see all the devices now in Device Manager in XP, but with exclamation marks.
Step 3 Get the XP drivers/software
The HP Compaq 6735s shares many components so you can get many drivers from this link:

I installed both the ATI HDMI Audio device and the Windows XP driver, you may only need the ATI HDMI.
Step 4 Installation
Install the drivers first (after devices have been detected), then the software. You will need to force install some of the drivers by going through Device Manager but most of the drivers have installation programs. CANCEL ANY DETECT HARDWARE DIALOG BOXES TO AVOID AUTO-INSTALLING THE WRONG VERSION OF A DRIVER.
You will also need to carry out a registry fix for the wireless LED. Copied from another post:
"For the Wireless LED its a little trickier. If you can find the root directory for your wireless network adapter like Paddy MacSeamus mentioned above its pretty simple. Follow his directions until you find your Wireless Network Adapter listed next to DriverDesc. In that same directory, i.e., 0003, add these Dword values just like you did above:
New->Dword
Value Name=gpioFunc0ActHi and Value Data=0
Click Ok.
New->Dword
Value Name=gpioPinFunc0 and Value Data=3
You are done. These values should be seen in the same window as DriverDesc and the name of your Wireless Network Adapter. The LED will work correctly after you disable and re-enable your wireless."
After doing all this, my DV5Z works correctly except for the following:
- Mute button LED always on orange
- No on-screen display of volume/mute etc. You can use Microsoft Intellitype (use the Digital Keyboard device and download this) instead of the HP software - see other forum posts if you need more info on where to find this
- QuickPlay key doesn't work. Presumably this can be fixed by installing the QuickPlay software for another notebook eg DV6000 series but I've not tried this
One final thing - I was given incorrect SP details by an HP person on an online chat session and told to refer to manufacturer websites for other drivers. The latter is incompetent but acceptable in my view, whereas the former is clearly unacceptable (why give out incorrect details on their own drivers and pretend they're doing me a favour?).
